1936년 Western Electric은 거대한 모션픽쳐 서비스 조직을 분사시키기로 결정한다.

(아마도 이것은 미국정부의 독점기업의 규제에 대비한 정책이었으나, Western Electric은 1938년과 1948년 두차례의 독점기업지정으로 영화산업에서 손을 땐다.)

이런 상황을 보기보다는 젊고 야망있는 엔진니어 그룹,George Carrington, L. W. (Mike) Conrow, Alvis Ward 등이 주축을 이루어 행동에  옮겼다. 그들은 그 상황의 경제적인 것보다 자신들의 능력에 대한 믿음이 더 많아서 ALTEC(All technical) 설립하고 앞으로 나아갔다. 알텍은 2년간 지속할 것으로 예견되었다.

​1937년에 알텍은 Electrical Research Products, Inc와 앞서 설립된 Western Electric 자회사의 국내 극장 사운드 서비스 및 유지 보수 사업을 맡는다.(이 원래 사업은 오늘날에도 여전히 존재하는 Altec Service Company의 기반을 형성했다.)

1938년 Western Electric은 (정부의 규제)판결에 서명하고, 모든 재고상품과 그 당시에 재직하는 엔진니어를 구룹을 포함하여 1달러에 Altec에 매각했다. 이 엔지니어들은 웨스턴 일렉트릭에서 독립된 새로운 회사, Altec Service Corporation를 형성했다. Altec​이란 이름은 새로운 회사의 주요방향를 내타내는「all technical』을 축소한 약자이다.

사장에는 Conrow,부사장에 Carrington,사무 회계에 Bessey가 맡았으며 대부분 극장영화의 기술 전문가들로 구성된 신생 회사는

1938년 웨스턴 일렉트릭에서 $ 23,499.66의 자산를 구입하여 새로운 업무을 시작했다.

​알텍의 가장 큰 자산은 웨스턴 일렉트릭출신의 295명의 오디오 산업분야에서 잘 훈련되고 경험이 많은 직원이었다. 그러나 이때까지는 단순 서비스 회사였다.

회사가 지속적인 성장을 하기위해서는 제품개발 능력이 필요하였다. 이것은 설비가 필요하였다. 거의 파산상태인 서부 해안지역(Los Angeles)의 스피커 제조회사인 Lansing Manufacturing Co.(주1) 가 그 기회를 제공하였다.

1941년에 Lansing Manufacturing Co.는 $50,000 알텍에 인수되었고, 알텍은 극장에 필요한 장비를 공급할 수 있는 공장을 갖게되었다.

Lansing과 Ken Decker가 1927년에 Los Angeles에 설립된 회사로 거대 기업인  Western Electric에 맞서 영화산업에 음향시설을 공급하는 사업을 하던중에 1939년 비행기 사고로 비즈니스 담당자인 Ken Decker가 죽고 재무상태가 나빠져 많은 은행부채가 많았던 상태였다. Altec Service Corporation 에 매각된 후 5년간 James B. Lansing은 Altec Service Corporation에서 상호를 변경한 Altec Lansing의 기술 담당 부사장직을 맡으며 기술개발에 전념하지만 5년후에 독립하여 지금의 JBL이 된 James B. Lansing Sound 을 설립합니다.

위에서 언급한 대로 알텍은 초기에 웨스턴의 엔진니어와 설비를 인수하여 시작합니다.

웨스턴 스피커는 지금도(가격에 문제만 제외하면) 최고의 스피커 입니다.

이러한 웨스턴 일렉트릭의 기술과 전통을 계승한 것이 바로 알텍이며, 지금도 초기의 알텍 드라이버나 우퍼들은 가격대비 최고의 스피커임에는 분명합니다.

다만, 이것은 극장용으로 만들어 진 것이기에 가정의 작은 공간에서 사용하기에는 경험과 기술이​ 필요한 것은 어찌할 수 없습니다.

By 1936, Western Electric decided to dissolve its big motion picture service organization. Rather than see this happen, a group of ambitious young engineers, headed by the late George Carrington, Sr., and L. W. (Mike) Conrow, and including Alvis Ward, went into action. They founded Altec (for "all technical"), more from faith in their own abilities than from the economic facts of the situation, and moved ahead. Predictions were that Altec might last two years.

Organized in 1937, Altec acquired the domestic theatre sound service and maintenance business of Electrical Research Products, Inc., the Western Electric subsidiary with whom its founders were associated. (This original business formed the basis for the Altec Service Company as it still exists today.)

In 1938 Western Electric signed a consent decree, and all of the manufactured stock holdings affected were sold for one dollar to a group of engineers working for them at the time. These engineers formed a new company, Altec Service Corporation, independent of Western Electric. The name Altec is a contraction of "all technical," signifying the new company’s primary directions. The principals of the new company were George Carrington and E. L. Conrow.

Mr. Conrow was president; Mr. Carrington, vice president and H.M. Bessey, secretary-treasurer. The fledgling company, composed of most of the country's talking picture experts, began life with assets of $23,499.66, purchased from Western Electric. Altec’s greatest asset was its people - 295 of the best trained and most experienced in the audio industry - but it was solely a service company up to this point.

If it was to continue to grow it needed to develop a manufacturing capability. This required facilities. A nearly bankrupt west coast loudspeaker company, Lansing Manufacturing Co., provided the needed opportunity. Lansing was purchased for $50,000 cash in 1941. Altec now had its facility to develop a source of supply for theatre equipment.
